Definitely, we live in a stressful city. It is full of rude people, in the subway, in the bus, wherever you are!!.
I have too many tales to tell about these kinds of issues.When I was working in a store, as a seller and cashier, I had to be very polite, but unfortunatelly people were not. That freaked me out!
They not even say hello or good morning. When people go to buy, forget that the workers are people too, and they need to be treated as people, not as machines or slaves. Please! You only have to say hello and your day and other´s day are going to be better.
Solution:
Media should show by posters on the city walls, in the subway, in the buses, T V spots, etc. How to be more polite with the people who you live with. I mean a publicitary campaign.
Meanwhile , I will say hello ever to all the people, wherever I go. Do it!

I empathize with you, because I worked in a store too and it's true that some people are very rude and impolite. I don't know why, I mean, say hello or thanks it's not that complicated...
However, I'm agree with you when you say that we should say hello to everybody, anywhere. As I said in my blog, the best way to change bad behavior it's giving the example to the others.

It is hard when you have to deal with that kind of person, above all when you are working, you just want to have a great day, and people don`t contribute in that… almost never!! So they make you feel your day longer than it should be…
I wonder… is it too hard to say “thanks”? Actually you could feel better just for saying that. Believe me…

I know how stressing is to deal with that kind of people, especially when you are a worker. Certainly, to say the "magic words" wherever we go is the best way to change people's mind.
Being polite is not complicated at all. It's time to demonstrate how kind everybody could be.
